THE STORY OF YOU by Donna Ashworth

"THE STORY OF YOU" by Donna Ashworth
She made a blue book,
with her learnings inside,
but nobody read it,
till after she died.
The wrath of her ego,
forbade her to share,
though the words she had penned,
were droplets of care.
Then one day, whilst searching,
for family clues,
her granddaughter stumbled
across the blue book.
She lost herself reading,
the dusty old tome,
and with every page turned,
felt herself coming home.
She rushed to her laptop,
and shared with the world,
these beautiful stories,
the book had unfurled.
Tales of heartbreak, endurance,
of loss and of gain,
a life full of lessons,
all free now, from shame.
The world was entranced,
by the chapters they read,
the doubt and the worry,
had been all in her head.
Her writing, a lifeboat,
to those lost at sea,
her musings, like torches,
the light made them see.
So write down your words,
in a book, red or blue,
there are many who need to read,
all you’ve been through.
And as the years pass,
and you’re gone from their view,
your pages will tell them,
the story of you.

EVERYDAY IS MOTHER'S DAY by Joanne Boyle

"EVERYDAY IS MOTHER'S DAY"
by Joanne Boyle

I wrote you out a card.
I filled it full of love.
I used my tears to seal It,
then I addressed it to the above.
I put it in a pillar box, and
I hope it finds its way,
but just in case it doesn't,
this is what I want to say.
I miss you in the moments,
through the sunlight and the rain.
I miss our conversations.
I long for them again.
I miss the simple things.
I miss you being there.
I don't really have a special place.
I miss seeing you anywhere.
I hope that you are watching,
with your family on your mind,
catching all our memories,
the ones you left behind.
Every day is Mother's Day
because you are in my heart.
And every day I meet you
in a time before we part.

DATE NIGHT by Becky Hemsley

"DATE NIGHT"
by Becky Hemsley

I met the moon for coffee
It was Friday night I think
When she watched me hardly sleeping
And invited me for drinks
We found ourselves a table
In the middle of the night
And the constellations twinkled
Like a thousand fairy lights
She asked me how I’d been
As she poured coffee from a pot
For she said she’d watched me
Waking up at midnight quite a lot
I said my brain was far too full
My mind was always on
And when I woke it felt as if
I was the only one
The only one who lay awake
Whilst I sat on my bed
With thoughts that raced at lightning speed
Around my busy head
The only one who watched the clock
Tick one and two and three
Who laid awake and worried
Whilst the world was fast asleep
My thoughts were stuck in orbit
And I couldn’t pull them back
As they preferred to swim against
A sky so vast and black
The moon said simply nothing
But she opened up a book
And I saw it was a diary
So I took a closer look
And listed there were names of people
All around the world
And all the thoughts and worries
That the moon had overheard
Just then, my eyes were drawn towards
The name that was my own
And that was when the moon said
“See, you shouldn’t feel alone”
And then she pulled me close
Using the night sky as a blanket
And said “I know you sometimes feel
So lonely on this planet
But when you cannot sleep,
Get up and watch me from your room
And you’ll see so many others
Having coffee with the moon”

HOLD ON TO THIS MIRROR by Joanne Boyle

"HOLD ON TO THIS MIRROR"
by
Joanne Boyle

I stood in front of you today
and looked you in the eye,
I told you to listen
to these rules that do apply.
It's NOT your fault for wanting,
or expecting some support.
It's NOT your fault that others
don't give you a second thought.
You are NOT to blame,
for that text they didn't send.
You are NOT to blame
for what happens at their end.
That it IS ok, to expect more
from those who say they care.
That it IS ok to feel angry
because you are always there.
That rejection that you feel
Well that's OK too
as long as you remember,
it reflects THEM more than you.
When you Question Why,
I will tell you why?
They don't know what they do,
or care if you cry.
So hold on to this mirror
and when you look me in the eye,
stand up and be counted,
as your feelings DO APPLY.

Jigsaw Pieces by Becky Hemsley

"Jigsaw Pieces" by Becky Hemsley

There is no solution to grief.
It is not a problem to be solved or a task to be completed.
It is an unfinished jigsaw. A puzzle with a piece perpetually lost.
You can still tell what the picture is, but there are details missing.
Like the sky missing a cloud or the ocean missing a wave.
It is still the sky.
It is still the ocean.
But it is quietly incomplete.
This is still life.
But it is missing a piece. A piece you will always long for.
And there is no solution to your puzzle because that piece was shaped to
your jigsaw – to your life, to you – and you will never replace it.
It is irreplaceable because it was shaped uniquely by love.
So it is ok that you’ll never quite feel full again.
It’s ok to know that you’ll never feel the true satisfaction of completing
the puzzle.
This is still love.
It is still life.
It is just quietly incomplete.

LIKE A GIRL by Becky Hemsley

"LIKE A GIRL"
by Becky Hemsley

She drives just like a girl you know
And throws just like one too
She fights just like a girl as well
She’s just no match for you
She also runs just like a girl
And that’s the way she plays
But when they say “just like a girl”
I think they mean to say
Worse
And somehow less
Somehow slower, somehow weaker
They think that if she’s ‘like a girl’
They’ll easily defeat her
But girls will go to battle
When they already are bleeding
And girls are great at throwing themselves
Upwards through glass ceilings
Girls are busy navigating progress,
Driving change
And girls are busy winning
Whilst you criticise their game
So tell her that she’s ‘like a girl’ -
She may just prove you right
She may out-play, out-last you,
Win the race and win the fight
‘Cause she’s a driving force
Fighting for her place in this world
And if you try to talk her down
She’ll rise up
Like a girl

THE FLAME by Becky Hemsley

"THE FLAME" "BEING A MOTHER WHO HAS LOST A CHILD" by Becky Hemsley
There’s an order that life is supposed to follow.
An order of breaths we are supposed to take,
as if we are passing a torch from one generation to the next.
And our torch is supposed to go out before our child’s flame is extinguished.
We are supposed to watch them take their first breath.
But not their last.
We are supposed to hear the thud-thud of their heart when it starts beating.
But never the silence when it stops.
That heart that we once carried inside of us. That breath that we gave them. That life that we kept safe, protected.
So when the order of life is disrupted,
when their torch goes out before yours,
it is as if you too have been robbed of your breath
and as if your heart has stopped beating as well.
There is nothing that can make it less painful.
You would happily blow out your flame if it meant theirs could burn.
But you can’t. Even though that’s how it should be.
So all you can do is carry them inside you -
like you did once before.
Except now they have to stay in your heart forever.
And though it hurts,
just know that they are safe there.
They are protected.
Because a mother’s love is unending.
Because it burns forever with every breath you take and
with every beat your heart makes.
Because a mother’s love
is a flame that can
never
be extinguished.
