Because of Love

Because of Love... (author unknown)
A brother and sister had made their usual hurried, obligatory pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm was where they had grown up and had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farm. Through the years the tree had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The young siblings had fond memories of their childhood here, but the city hustle and bustle added more excitement to their lives, and called them away to a different life.
The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, and getting out to the barn on those frosty mornings was getting harder, but it gave them a reason to get up in the mornings and a reason to live. They sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day's end.
Angry, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks "Why do you not at least dispose of The Old One? She is no longer of use to you. It's been years since you've had foals from her. You should cut corners and save so you can have more for yourselves. How can this old worn out horse bring you anything but expense and work? Why do you keep her anyway?"
The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, scuffed at the barn floor and replied, "Yes, I could use a pair of new boots. His arm slid defensively about the Old One's neck as he drew her near with gentle caressing he rubbed her softly behind her ears. He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love."
Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley. The old couple shook their heads in sorrow that it had not been a happy visit. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How is it that these young folks do not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts?
So it was, that because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smouldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One".
In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses.. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire's fury. His wife back from calling for help cradled him in her arms, clinging to each other, they wept at their loss.
By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife, exhausted from their grief, huddled together before the barn. They were speechless as they rose from the cold snow covered ground. They nodded thanks to the firemen as there was nothing anyone could do now.
The old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as his shaking old hands clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red Bandana. Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared and pray for our beloved most precious gifts that have been taken from us.
And so, he took her by the hand and slowly helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his old and withered hand.
The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they paused to rest, looking up to the top of the hill the old couple gasped and fell to their knees in amazement at the incredible beauty before them.
Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this. They were breathless as the old man held his wife tighter in his arms.
Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and mystified, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the tree, in resplendent glory, a mist hovering over and glowing in the darkness was their Christmas gift. Shadows glistening in the night light.
Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe.
At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares that were in foal with a new years crop of babies, pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of the old man and his wife.
Those she loved she had not disappointed. Her body was brittle with years, tired from the climb, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift---
Because of love. Only Because of love.

THE OLD FARMER

THE OLD FARMER
(author Chima Dickson)

There was a successful old farmer who grew tomatoes for many years. One day, his grandson told him.
"Grandfather, I want to achieve great things in life and make all of my dreams come true. What are the things I should avoid?"
The farmer paused for a moment and said.
"First of all, you should avoid procrastination. Secondly, you should never be afraid to fall. Thirdly, don't ever fool yourself. But the most important of them all, I won't tell you yet"
The boy asked.
"Why grandfather?"
The farmer responded.
"I will tell you at the appropriate time"
One week later, the farmer took his grandson to his tomato field for the first time. He showed him a large portion of land where he grew some of his tomatoes. When the farmer saw how amazed the little boy was, he asked him.
"How do you see them?"
The boy replied.
"They look very healthy. Their stems are solid, their leaves are green and their fruits are smooth and red"
The farmer smiled. Then he took him to a separate small portion of his tomato plants, and said to him.
"How about these ones? Can you compare them to the others?"
The boy shook his head and said.
"They don't look healthy. Their stems are weak, their leaves are yellow and they haven't developed any fruit yet. What do you think is the reason?"
The farmer uttered.
"That's because they are surrounded by unwanted plants called weeds. These weeds compete with the main plants for nutrients in the soil, leading to stunted growth for the plants"
Then the farmer held his grandson on his shoulders, looked at him in the eye, and said.
"Now is the appropriate time to answer your question completely. The most important thing you should avoid to become successful in life are negative people. These people are like the weeds and they would stunt your development and stop you from reaching your dreams. They have nothing to offer as they wallow in their problems and fail to focus on solutions. They are energy suckers and you will feel drained being around them. So you shouldn't surround yourself with such kind of people. Be around people who bring a smile to your face, fill your heart with joy and push you toward greatness. Choose your friends wisely and they will never put you down.

THE BAD TEMPERED BOY

THE BAD TEMPERED BOY
(author unknown)

There once was a young boy with a very bad temper. The boy’s father wanted to teach him a lesson, so he gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper he must hammer a nail into their wooden fence.

On the first day of this lesson, the little boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. He was really mad!

Over the course of the next few weeks, the little boy began to control his temper, so the number of nails that were hammered into the fence dramatically decreased.

It wasn’t long before the little boy discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Then, the day finally came when the little boy didn’t lose his temper even once, and he became so proud of himself, he couldn’t wait to tell his father.

Pleased, his father suggested that he now pull out one nail for each day that he could hold his temper.

Several weeks went by and the day finally came when the young boy was able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

Very gently, the father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

“You have done very well, my son,” he smiled, “but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.”

The little boy listened carefully as his father continued to speak.

“When you say things in anger, they leave permanent scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there”.

ONLY ONE SHOE

ONLY ONE SHOE
(author unknown)
A weak old man walked into a shoe store and asked for the price of a pair of shoes. After making his payment, he asked the sales person.
"Could you please show me your trash can?"
She responded.
"Right over there on the left"
The old man then walked towards the bin and dumped one of the shoes he just bought into it.
The sales person saw what he did and broke into uncontrollable giggles. She knew obviously that the old man was drunk. She mocked him and watched him leave the store with only one of the shoes.
The following week, the old man visited the shoe store again to buy another pair of shoes. Having recognized him, the sales person watched him carefully, waiting to see his next silly act. As soon as he paid for the new shoes, he moved towards the garbage bin and threw away one of the shoes, repeating his previous act.
The sales person wouldn't stop laughing at him. When the old man noticed that he was being teased, he felt miserable and left the store with only one shoe.
One week later, the old man came to the store for the third time. But this time around, the sales person had no option but to confront him.
"We don't have any shoes for you, drunk old man" she declared.
The man said calmly.
"But why? I have never owed you money"
The lady scoffed.
"Now listen here drunk old man, I have reported you to my boss, and he said we shouldn't let dumb people like you visit our store. So can you leave now?"
Just then, the store owner arrived and saw the two individuals having a little argument. The sales person was quick to give an explanation, blaming the old man. But on a quest to hear the other side of the story, the store owner asked the old man.
"Why do you always dump one of your shoes in our store?"
The old man paused for a moment, with tears in his eyes, he began to speak.
"When I lost my wife many years ago, I had to raise our only son all by myself. Luckily, he grew up into a bright young man and was the most hardworking and smartest person I knew. I sent him to college, and he made me very proud by graduating with honours. Later on, he worked as a computer engineer and won numerous awards in the course of his employment. But all of a sudden, tragedy struck and changed my son's life forever. Few months to his wedding, three years ago, he had a car accident and lost both his upper limbs and one of his legs. It hurts me so much as a father, and hurts me even more knowing that all my son's dreams in life had been terminated. Now, whenever I buy him shoes, I always discard the other pair because my son has only one foot".
Moral Of The Story:
Do not be too quick in judging other people. Every single person on the planet has a story, so don't judge or criticize anyone without having full knowledge of what they are going through.

PAY IT FORWARD

PAY IT FORWARD
(author unknown)

"While I was walking out of North Adams Massachusetts, I decided to swing into the Subway to get one last meal before getting back to the trail. I was in line ordering my meal after setting my pack down by a table. Another patron saw my pack and asked if I was hiking the trail. I said I was. He asked how it was going and in which direction I was going. I told him cold and wet and that I was heading south. Then he went back to his meal with the gentleman his was sitting with. Just before I was about to pay for my meal, he came up to the cashier and said that he would be paying for my meal. And despite my repeated attempts to thank him but defer the gesture, he won out and I allowed him to pay. As he was about to walk away we shook hands and exchanged names and I thanked him and he said "Semper Fi". This of course sparked a conversation about where we served and when. He then asked me if I had ever heard of @warriorhike. I informed him that I had hiked with Warrior Hike in 2013 on the AT and he said that he was the Quartermaster at the local VFW Post. He hosted me and the other Warrior Hikers that year!! We had met before and it all immediately came back to me!! Just simply amazing. I could go on out about our interaction but there is more to this story.
After thanking him and saying goodbye I went over to my food and began to eat the meal, his gift to a supposed complete stranger. While sitting there eating, on older woman walked in. She looked cold and appeared as though maybe she could use a little magic herself. She was alone but ordering for two. I thought how nice it would be for her to receive a gift much like I had. I walked up behind her and told her the story of what had just happened to me and then went on to say that I would like to do the same for her. She nearly collapsed and proclaimed "There IS a God!! Man, I really needed this one today!! I can't even tell you. Thank you. Thank you!!" She said. I could tell she wanted to hug me but I just put my arm around her and said, "I'm glad I was able to help you today ma'am."
I can only imagine how excited she will be to give the other meal to her friend or child or whoever it was that it was for. She might have been homeless or just down on her luck that day, I don't know. It doesn't even matter, she was happy in that moment. Small acts of kindness add up. Restores your soul sometimes. Restores your faith in others. Restores your faith in this world.
After the woman left I went back to my meal and one of the Subway workers came out and told me that I made both of their days as well. She thanked me and I thought the very least I could do was to ask them if they wanted to help me inspire others with this story. So I got them together for this picture
I don't have a picture of either of the people that were involved in this story but I've got to share it anyways. Not because I want praise but because I want you all to go out and do the same. Even if I only get a handful of you to do it, that's a handful of people that might have their days made by YOU!! Pay it forward people. It can matter. It can matter more than you know.
Share it. Share your time. Share your food. Share your money. Share your love. Share your stuff. Be the inspiration and change you want to see in this world. It starts with you and me."

What does it feel like to be old?

What does it feel like to be old?
(author unknown)

The other day, a young person asked me.

What did it feel like to be old?
I was very surprised by the question, since I did not consider myself old. When he saw my reaction, he was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question. And after reflection, I concluded that getting old is a gift.

Sometimes I am surprised at the person who lives in my mirror. But I don't worry about those things for long. I wouldn't trade everything I have for a few less gray hairs and a flat stomach. I don't scold myself for not making the bed, or for eating a few extra "little things." I am within my rights to be a little messy, to be extravagant, and to spend hours staring at my flowers.

I have seen some dear friends leave this world, before they had enjoyed the freedom that comes with growing old.
-Who cares if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 in the morning and then sleep until who knows what time?

I will dance with me to the rhythm of the 50's and 60's. And if later I want to cry for some lost love...I will!

I'll walk down the beach in a swimsuit that stretches over my plump body and dive into the waves letting myself go, despite the pitying looks of the bikini-wearers. They'll get old too, if they're lucky...

It is true that through the years my heart has ached for the loss of a loved one, for the pain of a child, or for seeing a pet die. But it is suffering that gives us strength and makes us grow. An unbroken heart is sterile and will never know the happiness of being imperfect.
I am proud to have lived long enough for my hair to turn grey and to retain the smile of my youth, before the deep furrows appeared on my face.
Now, to answer the question honestly, I can say: -I like being old, because old age makes me wiser, freer!

I know I'm not going to live forever, but while I'm here, I'm going to live by my own laws, those of my heart.

I'm not going to regret what wasn't, nor worry about what will be.
The time that remains, I will simply love life as I did until today, the rest I leave to God.

HEALTH, SUCCESS AND LOVE

HEALTH, SUCCESS AND LOVE
(author unknown)

"Once in a village, a woman saw three old men sitting outside her house. They were sitting there for quite a while.
The woman went outside and said,
'I don't know you, but I saw that you are sitting here for long, you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat.'
One of them asked,
'Is the man of the house at home ?'
She replied, 'No.'
'Then we cannot come in.', said the men.
The woman went inside. In the evening when her husband came, she told him about the people sitting outside and all that had happened.
He told his wife to go and ask those men to come in and have some food.
She went out and told them,
'My husband is home. He is inviting you all. Please come inside and have some food with us .'
They replied,
'We do not go inside a house together.'
When she asked why, one of the old men explained,
pointing to one of his friends, he said :
'His name is Wealth.
If he goes with you, your home will be filled with wealth always.'
Then pointing to another old man he said :
'He is Success.
If he goes with you, you will always be successful in any endeavour you start.'
He then introduced himself as Love.
'If I go with you, then your home will be filled with love always.'
Then he told her to go in and discuss with her husband which one of them they want in their home.
Her husband was overjoyed hearing about it and said,
'Let’s invite Wealth.
Let him come and fill our home with wealth.'
His wife disagreed and said, 'Why don’t we invite Success?'
Their daughter-in-law was listening to this.
She came to them and suggested,
'Wouldn’t it be better if we invite Love in our home ?
Then our home will be filled with love forever.'
The husband and wife agreed.
The woman again went out and said,
'Which one of you is Love ? Please come in and be our guest.'
Love got up and started walking toward the house. Just then the other two also got up and started following him.
The woman asked,
'You said you can not all can come together.
I invited only Love.
Why are you all coming in?'
The old men replied,
'If you had invited Wealth or Success then the other two would have stayed outside, but since you invite Love, wherever he goes, we go with him.'
Wherever there is Love, Wealth and Success will follow."
