WHEN by Becky Hemsley

"WHEN"
by Becky Hemsley

When did we all lose the thrill
Of running full-speed down a hill
Of marvelling at daffodils
Until the sun went down?
When did we stop spending days
On grassy verges weaving braids
Of plaited, fragile daisy chains
Until we’d made a crown?
When did we begin to lose
The urge to skip and race and move
‘Til we had scuffed our favourite shoes
All in the name of fun?
When was it that we forgot
Predicting ‘loves me, loves me not’
With flowers from a wild plot
That grew beneath the sun?
And when did we begin to miss
The chance to stop and make a wish
With dandelions clocks we’d picked
That grew beneath our feet?
Well I for one do not believe
That we forgot how all that feels
But life at some point took the wheel
And freedom took back seat
It seems that it got left behind
And buried ‘neath the daily grind
But it’s still there for us to find
At any time we want
So climb a hill then run back down
Weave yourself a daisy crown
Then blow your wishes to the clouds
Because life’s too short
to stop

OUR VISIT TO THE A&E

"OUR VISIT TO THE A&E"
(author unknown)

We found ourselves in A&E, sent by the GP.
I’d forgotten that A&E is like Dante’s Inferno. Or King Charles’ latest portrait. Which I rather quite like. Unlike that strange portrait of Kate. Possibly. If you need new glasses. If a portrait doesn’t look like the individual is it actually a portrait? Or a figment of the brush holders mind. Or simply a pile of shite.
Whoops. Where was I? Oh yes.

For four and a half hours. It seemed much longer. As we sat I observed our fellow human beings.
It was scary.

The highlight was a prisoner attached to a stout lady guard with handcuffs. Oh be still my beating heart. Was there about to be a heist where his gang were coming to bust him out? I quickly realised if we were forced to “get on the floor” I’d have to refuse. On the grounds this is A&E and I’m not getting onto a surface containing bodily fluid for anyone. Plus face down hurts my bosoms and with my dodgy legs I’d never get back up. So no. They’d have to heist with me sitting firmly on the self adhesive plastic chair. My attention then went back to the fact they’d attached Prisoner Cell Block H to such a sturdy lady guard he certainly wasn’t going to take flight. She was Titanic’s anchor to his canoe frame. The skinny male guard accompanying them looked surplus to requirements. Like a condom in a nunnery. I watch way too much Netflix and wondered if the Baddie had been shanked. But apparently he’d tripped up a step. Good Lord, all he needed was an aspirin and a cold compress.

Then came a none English speaking couple. The receptionist did a totally British thing. Spoke loudly and slowly. Nada. The lady then popped out her phone and got a friend at home, sat watching Hollyoaks (yep it was that loud), to translate. It was only when the tea trolley came around later that her English improved and she asked for a “black coffee with two sugars and a packet of custard creams please”.
And what’s with the meals on wheels in A&E? When I was a lass and you were sat there with your leg hanging off, no bugger brought you a variety of sandwiches. Yet here I was watching afternoon tea being served. Like a poor man’s Betty’s Tea Rooms. No wonder the lame suddenly jumped up from the wheelchair the lovely paramedics had brought them in on, directly from the ambulance they’d called. And in their pyjamas too. Carrying a packet of tabs. How organised.

I know. I know. I’m being totally unsympathetic. You can’t see every life threatening emergency.
But years of practice means I can spot a laissez-faire arsehole at twenty paces.
We all judge. Whether consciously or subconsciously. Not having suffered any head trauma I’m doing mine fully consciously.

One man moved around the seating area more times than a checker on a draught board. He was clearly a victim of St Vitus Dance. Which had given him an appetite. He requested two packs of sandwiches, biscuits and coffee. The coffee which he placed on the floor.

Behind him sat a couple with an assistance dog. A large lollopy mutt with an endearing face. Its presence was calming. And equally hilarious when it attempted to sit on its owners knee. Having been denied this comfort it decided the next best thing was a coffee. It appeared I was the only person who saw the dog drink Mr Wriggle’s coffee. The dog winked at me. We were conspirators.

It was only when the man picked his cup back up to drink it I thought “I’ll have to tell him!” Before this was quickly replaced by “aah f**k it. If I had to share a coffee, I’d pick the dog to share it with”.
My fellow human beings disappoint me at times. Looking around A&E half those waiting needed a quick once over with hanky and spit. A few could gave done with a cuddle (the dog, I’m mainly talking about the dog), a few more a “pull yourself together” chat, and 10% a jolly good doctor and an intravenous drip. With the strong odour of urine wafting around I’d be sending several home with a box of OMO.

Until we cure the culture of where there’s blame there’s a claim, the NHS will need to keep swallowing these bitter pills.

(Hurrah I haven’t got a blood clot, but still a huge fat leg.
And the trip to the A&E urologist confirmed the Grumpy One had a “serious” infection. But I can’t go back to Mad Max’s "Thunder-dome" any time soon

YOU ARE A DIAMOND by Tahlia Hunter

"YOU ARE A DIAMOND" by Tahlia Hunter
A diamond has many facets
reflecting light in different directions.
Each facet represents
a different fragment of yourself
at one age, one time, and one point along your path.
Each person you encounter
sees only one fragment of you
based on what they have heard about you or seen of you
at one stage of your life,
and is never able to fully glimpse who you are.
And so if you should find yourself
feeling ashamed of your past self
or broken or shattered at times,
may you remind yourself of the truth
that each facet of you
no matter how fractured it may appear individually
contributes to the precious jewel that you are;
for the light that you are shines beneath all
and you are never defined
by only one fragment of who you are."

JULY by Becky Hemsley

"JULY"
by Becky Hemsley

One time I met a girl
Who was a burning ball of light
She glowed with endless energy
From morning through til night
Her skin glittered with freckles
And her hair was plaited gold
And I decided I would like to be
Like her when I grew old
See, every room she entered
Soon became a little brighter
And you’d be warmed right to the soul
Just standing close beside her
She made it feel like summer
Even when the sky looked bleak
And she could thaw your winter
With a kiss upon your cheek
And people asked why I would want
To follow in her glow
And I was always stunned
That they just didn’t seem to know
‘Cause why would I be winter
When I could be warm July?
What a gift to be the sunshine
In another person’s sky

COLLATERAL by Becky Hemsley

"COLLATERAL"
by Becky Hemsley

A figure in black came to see you last night
And told you that now was the time
And as your heart took final leave of this world
It took with it fragments of mine
And now I’m left here trying to pick up the pieces
And cutting myself on the shards
Wishing ironically you could be here
To help me through something so hard
See, there are some pieces so large and so heavy
I can’t pick them up off the floor
And these are the parts that I want to hold most
but I’m scared that I can’t anymore
And I know that one day I’ll summon the strength
To cobble myself back together
But there’ll always be cracks from where I fell apart
‘Cause my heart has been altered forever
Yes, they say life goes on, but I know there’ll be days
When I find myself struggling to manage
Because whilst it’s your heart that has taken its leave
It appears mine’s collateral damage

REMEMBER by Tahlia Hunter

"REMEMBER"
by Tahlia Hunter

My grandmother once said,
“You have to remember to catch the compliments:
every precious and kind word spoken about you,
add them to a jar,
so that in the times when you feel low,
you can read them and remember how special and loved you are.
And be reminded on the days
that you feel you cannot love yourself
that there is someone who loves you far more than you could ever imagine
and is grateful for your presence here on this Earth.
And in the times when you feel unappreciated by others,
love is the only thing that will outlast this life.
All else will eventually fade away.”

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY by Pam Ayers

"FIFTY SHADES OF GREY"
by Pam Ayers
The missus bought a Paperback
down Shepton, Saturday,
I had a look inside her bag;
T'was "fifty shades of grey".
Well, I just left her to it,
At ten, I went to bed.
An hour later, she appeared;
The sight filled me with dread.
In her left, she held a rope;
And in her right, a whip!
She threw them down upon the floor,
And then began to strip.
Well, fifty years or so ago,
I might have had a peek;
But Mabel hasn't weathered well;
She's eighty-four next week!!
Watching Mabel bump and grind;
could not have been much grimmer.
Things then went from bad to worse;
She toppled off her Zimmer!
She struggled back upon her feet;
A couple minutes later,
she put her teeth back in and said
I must dominate!
Now, if you knew our Mabel,
You'd see just why I spluttered,
I'd spent two months in traction
For the last complaint I'd uttered.
She stood there nude and naked
Bent forward just a bit
I went to hold her, sensual-like
and stood on her left tit!
Mabel screamed, her teeth shot out;
My god, what had I done!?
She moaned and groaned, then shouted out:
"Step on the other one"!!
Well, readers, I can't tell no more;
About what occurred that day.
Suffice to say my jet-black hair,
Turned fifty shades of Grey.

SMILE, FORGIVE BUT DON'T FORGET

"SMILE, FORGIVE BUT DON'T FORGET"
(author unknown)

My mother once told me, "If they hurt you, forgive them, but never forget what they've done." This advice has stayed with me every time I meet someone new. But sometimes, it's exhausting. It’s frustrating to show kindness and receive pain in return, and it's disheartening to admire someone only to be backstabbed.
One day, I asked my mother, "Mom, do they deserve my forgiveness?"
She smiled and put down the newspaper she was reading, part of her morning ritual. "Child, everyone deserves forgiveness. If they hurt you once, forgive them. If they do it twice, give them another chance. But if they do it three times, then it’s time to forgive yourself."
Confused, I must have looked puzzled. My mother noticed and laughed, then took my hands in hers. "Forgive yourself for believing in them and getting disappointed. Forgive yourself for trusting too much. Forgive yourself for giving another chance, thinking it would be better. Free yourself from hatred, revenge, and the past."
The next morning, I found her crying in front of my father, betrayed by a friend of ten years. When I asked if she now hated her friend, she shook her head and smiled. "My heart has no room for hatred. I don't deserve to suffer from it. I have forgiven her, but I won’t forget what she did. Seeing me smile despite everything will show her who truly suffers."
Wiping her tears with the handkerchief I had given her, she added, "The best way to respond to someone who hurt you is to live a better life. Let them see what they lost and how they inadvertently helped you grow. We only live once; don't waste time on those who scar your heart. Show them what they missed out on and how they helped you become better."
Thanks to her words, I realized that if it weren't for her wisdom, I might still be haunted by things that weren't my fault.

FRIENDSHIP HAS A WHISPER by Joanne Boyle

"FRIENDSHIP HAS A WHISPER"
by Joanne Boyle

Friendships whisper.
I thought of you today.
I realised it had been a while,
since we all caught up,
so, I got my phone to dial.
Then I got distracted.
The days turned to weeks.
Are we really friends?
When friendship hardly speaks.
Yet in our hearts we know,
the love is always there.
When one of us needs the other.
We are there to care.
Friendship has a whisper.
It doesn't go unheard.
It wraps you in its love, and
is always getting shared.
